Probably one of the best-reasoned arguments for the reasserter view of Scripture on this subject I've ever seen. Gagnon takes some of the more common arguments in favor of a new view of homosexuality ("God made me this way," the shellfish argument, etc.) and dismantles them, one by one. A good read.

I bought this in hardcover last year and am just now halfway through it. Not an easy read, but rewarding. This is a work that Publishers Weekly calls a "masterful interplay of biography and literary criticism" that examines the lives and work of four great 20th century Catholic American writers: Flannery O'Connor, Thomas Merton, Dorothy Day and (my personal favorite) Walker Percy. I've read some of McLaren's other books (The Story We Find Ourselves In, More Ready Than You Realize, A New Kind of Christian), and while I don't always agree with his conclusions, I do agree that the questions he asks are important. I got this excerpt from Teresa of Avila's The Interior Castle because it had a introduction by Dallas Willard, but now I'm hooked. Even across five centuries, her explanations of how we progress in the journey to Christlikeness are completely relevant. (****)
